RHS Tatton Flower Show and Whitaker Park, Rawtenstall
First exhibited at the RHS Tatton Flower Show and then relocated to it's permanent home in Whitaker Park, Rawtenstall.
Principle Design
I was appointed as designer and Principal Designer, and took the scheme from inception through concept and detailed design to a full tender package, then through construction to completion on site
The project addressed the flood risk created by the national trend towards paved front gardens. It set out two approaches side by side - retrofitting sustainable drainage and rainwater harvesting into an existing garden, and building them in from the start in a new one, with options for both free draining and poorly drained ground. Both made space for water, planting and nature, and for rainwater reuse, biodiversity, urban cooling and wellbeing.
New and reclaimed materials were designed to work together, to show that good contemporary garden design can be achieved on a budget. The garden is now used as an educational resource, teaching the cumulative value of front gardens in our towns and cities, with worked examples and DIY approaches to climate-resilient planting and water management.
